GodWars
GodWars had a distinct approach relying on a heavily emphasized PvP (Player VS Player) orientation. This new codebase with its fresh style hit the Internet in 1996, spawning many servers.
Its combat system was sophisticated and subsequently very complex compared to other Diku-derivative codebases.
It also had a unique area system, with a large world that relied more heavily on maps, and was dependent on a coordinate system.
The source may have never been released, were it not for a strange turn of events.
According to the admin KaVir himself (Richard Woolcock), the code for GodWars (and SMAUG) was at some point stolen and released.
KaVir further stated that [the theft] forced the original coders (including himself) to release the code officially because “the authors wanted to at least have some control over the distributions”.Many, many variants were eventually created, including a direct "sequel" by the original author himself, referred to as God Wars II. Unfortunately, this new codebase was never released to the public.
