CopperMUD
Originally a private DikuMUD (called CopperDiku) server running at Copper.Denver.Colorado.EDU, started in June of 1991. The code was eventually released half a year later on December 15th, 1991.
After nearly a year of substantial updates, CopperDiku was replaced by Copper II (version 2) on November 30th 1992.
Copper was an innovative iteration on DikuMUD which expanded the number of users to 50 initially, and introduced custom prompts (that supported the ability to display health/mana/movement points), as well as mobile code so that mobs could have MEMORY.
Copper brought with it new areas that became staples, such as the Drow, Desert, and Lost City.
Many features were instituted that were later taken for granted, such as WIMPY, outdoor rooms becoming dark after the sun going down, , mobs having aggressiveness based on character alignment, mobile infravision , and even the Max Mana of clerics and mages increasing when gaining levels.
Conversely, many common staples were taken out, such as charm spells, most of the non-combat abilities for thieves (e.g., picking locks) and even poisoned food/drinks did not exist in CopperMUD.
While Copper's codebase use dropped quickly by the mid-90s, it was responsible for bringing the MUD community MercMUD, one of the most popular Diku-derivatives ever.
The MUD Institute is still trying to find a copy of the CopperII codebase that was released to the public (likely named CopperII.tar.Z)
